Chapter Seven
Chey lay over Eagle, feeling weary and broken as Max ran a cool cloth over his brows. He had already tended to Eagle, and now he was attempting to bathe Chey.
“How long has it been?” he asked weakly, looking broken and defeated. Max feared Chey would never find happiness in the world again from the despondent lines marring his beautiful face.
“Seventeen hours,” Max answered as he set the cloth aside and sat on the bed. “Tell me again why you have to hold onto him, go through this with him.”
Eagle and Chey looked like they’d been ravaged with a sickness. Both of his mates were pale and sweat soaked. Dark circles had formed under both their eyes, although Max had noticed that Chey had worn them before all of this had begun.
“If I don’t absorb it, he’ll never truly be healed. I have to take the pain away so he can be at peace with what happened to him.”
Max didn’t like it.
Chey was so small and fragile looking. He feared Chey wasn’t going to survive if Eagle’s journey took much longer. Hell, he feared Eagle wouldn’t survive. Max didn’t like any of this, but he was powerless to stop it. The only thing he could do was watch Eagle writhe around as he screamed and begged for the last seventeen hours as Chey held on for dear life.
Soldiers sat around the room, none of them leaving Eagle’s side as he was hurtled into his past, forced to relive every horrific moment.
Max wanted to shout for them to get the hell out. He didn’t want them to see Eagle’s pain, but he knew these men had suffered right along with Eagle. They had more right to be here than Max did.
Max turned sideways and lay down, hanging onto his mates as he wondered how they were going to be mentally once this was over. What kind of damage was this healing going to do to them?
“Thank you,” Chey croaked softly.
“For what?” Max asked. He hadn’t done a damn thing. He felt helpless in all of this. Chey was helping Eagle through this, but what was Max really doing? Max wondered why fate had made the three men mates when it was obvious how much Chey and Eagle needed each other. What did they need Max for?
“For being here. For staying by our side. For pulling us through this.”
Max nodded. He wasn’t sure how to respond to that. He felt like he was invading something private between the two but was unable to pull away.
He glanced over at Eagle when his mate finally settled. “Is he reliving another memory?”
Chey shook his head weakly. “He’s sleeping now. It’s finally over. Zeus has defeated Jackson, and the men no longer have to live in fear.”
Chey laid his head on Eagle’s chest, fast asleep in seconds. Max moved away, unsure what his role was now. He had been unsure of his role through all of this.
“Thanks,” Memphis said as he laid a hand on Max’s shoulder.
